I saw the original thread here http://slickdeals.net/forums/show...&t=2742429 , which mentions that you can get your DVR and STB boxes upgraded for free without paying the $40 exchange fee. I read the thread and didnt see anything mentioning this explicit method. If some of it is a repost I apologize, but I feel like for the sake of being fool-proof, this is worth its own thread.

发帖数: 1105 | 4 现在用Dish DVR VIP612，空间已经不够了，而且很快搬家后Dish能不能用还不好说，
所以想把以前存下的电影录到电脑里。做了很多google的工作，基本上有3个选择：
(1)拆掉硬盘，然后用PVR Explorer读，好像不支持我DVR的型号，我用的是612。
(2)用Archos 605 WiFi media player可以下载DVR里的东西，但是这个成本太高，大概
$200左右
(3)用video capture device，然后一边放video，一边重新录。这个过程会很慢，而且
video的质量会有损耗。之前试过买了个Asus USB TV Tuner，用cable线连上以后死活
找不到DVR放出来的画面，只好作罢。
现在很困惑。有没有大虾曾经研究过这件事情的分享一下经验。多谢！ |

换了几根线，都没有反应。
有什么简易办法测DVR 后面RS485 的端口是不是有信号出来？ 我用万用表直流电压和
交流电压都试过，没有可测的电压。 |

activate the USB port on my VIP722 for free... He told me that starting
today (2/1), the USB activation will be FREE of charge (previously one time
$40 fee). I called back this morning and the service rep activated the port
without any questions. Dish allows up to 2TB external HD through the USB
connection.

印象中步骤应该是用calbe线连上，然后电视机切换到channel 3，不知道用Tuner card
怎么搞。上次那个Asus tv tuner，连线后search频道半天都愣是找不到DVR输出的视频
信号。难道channel 3不该有信号吗？

especially for Comcast.
Comcast has lots of free HD on demand. No cable card tuner on the market now
supports on Demand even with M card.
However, if cost is not your concern and on Demand is not a big deal to you,
ATI has a USB cable card on the market and you better have Win7 media
center on your laptop. HDhomerun may also roll out a standalone box for you
to record on your PC later this year.
