Explanation: Small, icy, inner moon of Saturn, Enceladus is only about 500
kilometers in diameter. But the distant world does reflect over 90
percent of the sunlight it receives, giving its surface about the same reflectivity
as fresh snow. Seen here in a sharp view from the Cassini
spacecraft's recent flyby, Enceladus shows a variety of surface
features and very few impact craters - indicating that it has been an active
world even |

Saturn's curious moon Enceladus appears to have the same chemical makeup as
a comet, according to the latest results from the Cassini probe. That's a
big surprise, as Enceladus should have formed in very different conditions
from those of comets.
On 12 March, Cassini flew through the huge plume of steam and other gases
that spews from fissures at the moon's south |

An ocean is not the source of the jets emanating from Saturn's moon
Enceladus, a new study concludes.
The research questions the moon's promise as a target in the search for life
beyond Earth and has stirred controversy among scientists who dispute its
conclusions.
A chemical analysis of Enceladus, led by University of Colorado planetary
scientist Nick Schneider, failed to detect sodium, an element scientists say
should be in a body of water that |

On Nov. 12 a robotic lander called Philae is scheduled to touch down on a
comet, following a journey of 10 years and more than 3.7 billion miles. The
mission aims to provide insights into how the solar system evolved, and
whether comet impacts helped form Earth's oceans and brought chemical
precursors of life. (Image courtesy of European Space Agency).

spacecraft now orbiting Saturn drifted in giant planet's shadow for about 12

unlike any other. First, the night side of Saturn is seen to be partly lit
by light reflected from its own majestic ring system. Next, the rings
themselves appear dark when silhouetted against Saturn, but quite bright
when viewed away from Saturn, slightly scattering sunlight,...
