今天找到了。她从家里逃出来,企图坐火车回伦敦,被丈夫阻止(医生让她在乡间养病

暑假回国,偶从家中故纸堆里翻到一张旧剪报,昔之所爱,今尤戚戚,输入电脑附录于
后。
该文发表于1998年的《新民晚报》,作者张新颖是复旦中文系的青年才俊,此前看过他
的《栖居与游牧之地》一书。当时在书店里随便翻到几本令人眼前一亮的书,都出自中
文系的年轻学者:除了张新颖,还有吕新雨的古希腊悲剧,郑元者的图腾美学。张新颖
的书是系主任陈思和主编的火凤凰新批评丛书之一;这套丛书颇为红火,同列其中的系
友还有《拯救大地》的郜元宝、《季节轮换》的李振声和《在功利与唯美之间》的王彬
彬。这些年轻人日后都成为呼风唤雨、独当一面的骁将猛士,让人感叹中文系人才济济,
切磋激励,文思俱进。
文章所写的赵萝蕤更是让我感到亲切的外文界前辈。赵萝蕤出身名家,其父赵紫宸历任
东吴大学教务长、燕京大学宗教学院院长,不仅是知名的神学家,并且精研诗词。赵萝
蕤从小中西兼学,文采过人。十六岁入读燕京大学英文系时,外籍教师布置阅读的名著
篇目,她早从家中书架上遍览无遗,其师惊许。好友钱穆后来回忆西南联大期间,图书
馆所藏英文文学各书,赵几乎无不披览,师生群推之。

我倒不是说因为写作导致自杀,自杀的原因复杂得多。woolf还有sylvia plath都有病
理性自杀倾向,企图自杀过好几次。三毛用丝袜自吊或许是个意外,但总是她自己的行
为。人死为大,所以我说可怜可叹。不过她们的作品的确有很明显的自我封闭自我欣赏
的倾向,三毛后来那些写故乡行啊敦煌行啊的文字完全把自己当作名人来作态了,看得
这个难受。我主要想说的是这种自我的文字就算了;生死不想评论,看来没有淡化好。
其实叶嘉莹的丈夫也因为政治入狱多年,脾气变坏,不只是因为叶嘉莹的缘故。但也没
办法讲得那么细。

这个常人确实不至于因为生病就去自杀,所以三毛做了,被扣了不少分
徐迟甚至海子那些其实是和woolf/plath那些有点象,是属于病了
关于政治原因,陈丹青曾经罗列了文革中的那批自杀的文艺人
按他的意思,我们这些文艺青年,都该自杀,早死早好

当初为了跟Y好,我一遍遍的跟她说跟自己说这是爱情,这是宿命,说到自己都觉得苍白。但那时,这些似乎并不那么重要。 从被Woolf血泪控诉的男权主义的角度来看,与Y的接触宣告了我的以对女性身体的好奇为标志的青春期的结束。
是的,那个可以杀死猫的东西。
我无从记起自己是什么时候第一次看到女体,但我清楚的记得对着路米斯的《人体素描》手淫。这个事情回想起来最有意思的是,一个男孩子可以很早就了解到可以靠手淫去获得快感,但却不知道何为性交。所有的影视文学作品都在肉体欲作还休欲罢不能的那一瞬间奇迹般的上升到灵魂的高度,比如一段广告什么的。这种桥段看的真让人沮丧。
一个问题让我思索的欲作还休欲罢不能:如果一个男人可以全面的控制一个女人(um……裸女……)他到底会做什么?

让我想起Woolf对诺贝尔奖获得者高尔斯华绥的缺乏自我反思的传统现实主义的批评。
另,战争可能确实是最摧枯拉朽的,没有切身经历过的徐志摩无法完成那样的心灵毁灭
和重塑。战争可以摧毁一个日不落的人类历史上最大的帝国,又有哪一个个体的心灵可
以逃脱。叹息。。。
纯粹就此文个人瞎说两句,没有隐喻,谈诗是件高兴的事情,看见一篇好文也是如此。

灌水的愿望是没有什么由来的。以前海牛曾经说越是忙就越是想上网灌水。
对这个论点的评价只能引一句丹东的话:'真理,严酷的真理.'
可能是因为正在重读约翰克里斯多夫,所以想灌一些有关法国作家的。
手头什么都没有,有的只是记忆里一些遥远模糊的印象, 肯定错误
百出, 所以叫作灌水。
纪德的东西其实看得并不多,但长久以来对这个名字一直比较敬仰。在各
处读过的有关纪德的评论到是不少,就依靠这些构筑起了一些支离破碎
的认识。
纪德称得上是本世纪初文坛的一个大师吧,和普鲁斯特,James Joyce,
Virginia Woolf 等的地位不相上下。他主要是小说家,在小说结构上作
了很多美学上的创新,同时纪德又写过很多散文和自传作品,如有名的
刚果游记。纪德当然也是一个重要的文学批评家。他成名后为别人的很多
作品写过序言。我看过的一本圣埃克佩叙里的'夜航',前头就是纪德写的
序,很棒。
纪德母亲那一支是加尔文派教徒,纪德的父亲是巴黎大学教授,不太管
儿子。于是纪德从小被母亲严加管束,痛苦不堪。各种道德戒律和现实
欲望的冲突可能在纪德小时侯就已经是心理活动的主题了,所以未来
纪德的小说里经常出现人

because it gave me a strong sense of both ornateness and brevity, just
like the signature of or's style.
It reads great though, particularly considering that the original was

this list is very short.
i think penguin tried to pick up different kinds of novels, to be
representative instead of being comprehensive.
so they have joyce and proust, but exclude faulkner and woolf;
choose edith wharton's the age of innocence, but exclude henry james
who's much superior to wharton, possibly for the reason of admitting space
to female writers.

纯粹论相貌很难找到十全十象的呢, 把时代特征打扮出来就有几分了.
对襟开衫长裙子, 头发中分, 服贴得象上了蜡, 或者戴个宽沿帽, 帽子上绑几片大羽毛..
就象Frida, 演员也不太象, 就是扣住了特征, 衣饰.
连心眉, 头发拢上去, 缠了一层层的布, 正中一巨大的蝴蝶结,
项上厚甸甸的玻璃串子, 裙子盖脚, 颜色都是鲜艳无比的.
先声夺人impress观众..
kate winslet是不是比较矮啊, 我在猜找nicole是不是因为她长的高或者给人感觉她很高
..
woolf高, 背不直, 尤其年老的时候..

Just finished this book yesterday. Have not really obsorbed much. ;)
This book...It's a world with so many glass doors, entering,
exitting, a crystal ball inside another crystal ball.(quote or:
"七窍玲珑, 又具透明流动的气质.") In it there is this harmony: a tone
feminine and compassionate. It does not judge these people: whether
woolf, or laura, or clarissa. (even richard) Somehow this absence of

These recently had motion pictures coming out. both novels and movies were
quite popular. you might take an interest. there are too many to recommend
tho.
(Side note: how come nicole kidman got golden globe??!! I thought her acting
was the 2nd worst in the movie, next to the actor who played Richard the poet.
Her Mrs. Woolf frowned all the time and pursed the lips, kept that same
childish grumpy expression from beginning to the end.

"non-required reading - prose pieces" by a polish poetress and translated by a
northwestern univ. prof.
the essays are v. short and casual and witty, not as intelligent as woolf's.
nevertheless both poets and translators are masters of language. and you
definitely will feel these two advantages from this book.

//hand你说的这些续集我在大学里翻过,当时可能是新出的英文本。是不好啊但当时
真是甚么书都看。Liz变的疑神疑鬼优柔寡断,全走样了。
简爱的前传茫茫藻海还是蛮好的,虽然人物也都走样了。
Persuasion是极好的。N久前我第一次看了就极度喜欢。这是作者临终前最后一部完
整作品,从一贯的对话白描喜剧风格走开,望向后来的意识流派或是擅长reflection的,
象Woolf, James等等了。不象Emma那样技巧完美滴水不漏,但优美浓郁的气氛弥漫
不散。
在国内是不流行的,很多人会觉得dense,译文也表达不出原作之好。在英美还是算
popular的,高中生的暑假读物。Harold Bloom的有本介绍古典小说的书,自言隔数
年就会买Persuasion因为屡屡重看,书册卷旧不堪,极度推荐此书。
P&P常被旧酒新装,现代作家取用情节,象BJ's Diary,Jasmine Field等,(多数和
续集一样不好看)。Persuasion也是这样的。
至於在评论家眼里:有一本书"Jane Austen & Mozart", 把P&P, Emma, Persuasion,

i haven't sort out myself on vw yet
the last paragraph leaves me with impression that vw led a painful life with
lots of ups and downs...
somewhere i got a glimpse on the new vw biography by hermione lee...saying the
book reveals new facts on the relationship b/w leonard and vw...showing the
necessity of the support, mentally and financially, from leonard for vw's
work...i have to read the biography first to say anything...

最近书看的很杂,先是Cormac McCarthy,Border Triology和Blood Meridian, 再重新读
Woolf的Mrs Dalloway. 然后转中文书,叶兆言写的“没有玻璃的花房”, 莫言的“四十
一炮”和陈世旭的“将军镇”。本来还想看张洁的“无字”,看了几页,不知所云,也就
罢了。新年后看了不少best sellers (我列过一个书单),看完the Pillards of the
Earth后有一种很强的失落感,目前正在找书看。可能在Kazuo Ishiguro (When we were
orphans), Chang-Rae Lee (Native Speaker) 和 Best American Travel Writing (最近
几年每年一本,都不错看的样子)里选一本来看。

I find very hard to read Faulkner, I've read "The sound and the fury",
his language is difficult, but in a deliberate and calculated way,
unlike Virginia Woolf, whose writing demands intelligence and concentration
from a reader, but has every reason to be and rewards the reader enormously
if he's persistent enough to pull through.
I have same difficulty with Steinbeck, ("East of Eden"), maybe it's just
my inability to appreciate the southern culture in general.

leisure版的网友问起文字优美的英文书,我推荐了Lamb,Hazlitt,Priestley等几个
英国散文家。网友又问具体文集,我手边的《英国散文名篇欣赏》里正好有些介绍,我
就抄上来一起分享。不过这几个作家都很早,尤其Lamb和Hazlitt。最好网上先找一两
篇试着读读,如果有兴趣,再去图书馆借文集……哈哈就我省钱。主要是担心买来书如
果读不进,太古奥或者生涩或者不对胃口,挺可惜的。上外编的这本《英国散文名篇欣
赏》,每篇之前都有作者介绍,选篇都有译文、赏析;即便这样,我本科读的时候还是
觉得难。有机会很想再读一读,与喜欢读英语的网友共勉。

基督徒不好说谎吧。这些证据确凿的事儿,再为他辩护,我觉得不太好。
他后来自建神学院,也算功德一件。他若真有底气,可以学学那些开山祖师的魄力。
比如:woolf,她结交了这么多牛津/建桥的毕业生,自己却是自学成才。但是,唯
有她成为最出色的作家。
