A senior Volvo executive said the Swedish automaker would start exporting
Chinese-made sedans, a long-wheel-based version of the S60 called the S60L,
to the United States and the XC90 utility crossover to Russia as early as
the end of next year.

Mr. Samuelsson said it could be that the first Chinese-made cars sold in
significant volume in the U.S. will be Volvos. “It could very well happen,
” he said.
However, Mr. Samuelsson and senior vice president for marketing Alain Visser
said the quality of Chinese made Volvos would have to be up to the same
standards as Volvos made in Europe, and the company would have to be
confident U.S. customers would accept Chinese made cars.
The company’s first priority is to lower its costs by manufacturing more
vehicles in China for sale in China, Mr. Samuelsson said. Volvo has opened a
new car factory in Chengdu, a new engine plant in Zhangjiakou in northern
China and plans to launch another car assembly plant in Daqing early in 2014. | t*******y
