Pulsation and Vibration Felt when hitting the brakes
Hello enthusiasts, I just hate it when qualified/unqualified mechanics just
mention a thing of two or three as source of a problem and none of them is
it!!!!!
As I drive my 2001 S40, for speeds above 60km/h and as I hit the brake pedal
there appears to be some rather heavy vibration on the steering wheel and
front train if I may say, that makes one worry; this only when you hit the
brake pedal either for slowing down or for a complete stop. I could also
feel a pulsation on my foot incoming from the brake pedal as if it was going
back and forth up/down (I am alittle bit dramatizing, but this is the feel)
. when the car speed is below50-60, this problem is not encountered.
OF course, the first thing to check are the brake pads and then the brake
disc, and I was almost sure it were the pads or the disc that must have been
damaged after some condultation with a mechanic on the possible reasons
behind. ARmed with my tools, over this weekend, I got down to it and removed
the calipers on both front wheels, only to discover that both 4-pads and the
2 discs ofthe front wheel were NEW and smooth. I was frustrated. I was
wondering what could be the source of the vibration...

I am now with my fourth set of brakes that was installed just last week (Aug
22,2016) on my 2016 XC90 T6 Momentum and the squealing has returned in just
over a week of driving with a vengeance. Every time I come to a stop I hear
it after about 20 minutes of driving so the I am guessing at this point the
brakes are now heated up. I don't understand why this is so bad of an issue
nor why it can't be fixed. My son has a 2013 Hyundai Veloster that is now
four years old and doesn't make a sound. I have never had this many issues
with any of my GMC Denali's or Acura MDXs that I have owned over the years!
I truly moved over to this car because it was touted as the best and safest
on the market.. according to Car and Driver, Motor Trend and etc. Since
purchased in November of 2016 my car has visited the shop for just about
almost every issue listed in this forum. Every other month it has been down
for days, weeks, almost a month at one time. I really love this car but it
is really painful to keep dealing with all of these issues. The dealership
has been helpful and slow to respond at times at this point and I think they
are tired of seeing and dealing with me. I have sent emails to Volvo Cares
with no response.
Please Volvo on behalf of every owner that bought the 2016 XC90 model please
, please, please help us. I am in the market for a second new car and if all
was good with this one it would have been a slam dunk to buy another Volvo
but now I am thinking this is no longer an easy choice. We need this brake
issue fixed! I think it would be simple to contact someone who is an expert
in braking like Brembo to get their advice or maybe even contract the work
out to them.
Please help!

pads.
Now I have the same symptoms on my 2016 XC90 - I would trust Volvo engineers
to have fixed it by now. My spouse took it to the dealer and they said they
took everything apart could not find anything wrong. Now it squeaks AND,
pulsates. | s*****e 发帖数: 893 | 6 Brakes vibrate when applied - xc90

The brakes on my XC90 vibrate when applied as though the ABS is operating. I
have checked the discs and pads - the discs are in good order and the pads
are fine and were only replaced 5000miles ago. The ABS light goes out as
normal at start up and does not illuminate when the brakes are used.
Reversing and then applying the brakes appears to temporarily clear the
problem and the next time the brakes are used when going forward they are
smooth and effective. Thereafter when the brakes are used travelling
forwards, they vibrate. I have repeated this process on a number of
occasions and each time the vibration returns as though the ABS is operating?
I had thought that it may have been dirty brakeshoes or a build up of dust
but this does not appear to be the case. Can anyone offer advice before I
take the vehicle into the my local agent.
Thanks

Postby ojdorson » Thu Apr 21, 2011 3:57 am
I'm currently trying to sort out an issue with front-end shaking when
braking from highway speeds (~65-90). I'm getting a lot of shaking. I've
replaced everything from the flex lines to the pads - new ss lines, new
rotors, new (rebuilt) calipers and new pads. It sure feels like warped
rotors, but I've got three of them and it happens with all combinations of
those three. It's highly doubtful that I've received more than one warped
rotor, isn't it? I mean, it'd be just my luck, sure, but really? I have
another replacement coming, but it's back ordered and will not get here
until around May 11th. Then, I'll try my luck with the combinations of those
four.
I did the bed-in procedure - several "panic" stops from varying highway
speeds. The brakes are perfectly smooth at 'round town speeds and only shake
from ~65-90 whether they're lightly applied or heavily. It's much worse
when they're lightly applied.
Is it definitely a rotor problem? Could it be the pads? What else could it
be?
I'm going to take it in for an alignment soon and will ask them to check all
the front suspension components, but could it really be anything like wheel
bearings or control arms if it's only happening when braking at those
speeds?
Thanks! | s*****e 发帖数: 893 | 8 The car had pulse vibration when I brought it, I changed the pads, and front
rotor, thinking it was "wrapped brake", I first changed pads, then rotors a
week later. I noticed the new pads in front, have only the outer part (2/3)
wearing mark, the inner 1/3 seem not even contact the rotor after a week!
Still, after I replaced the rotors this afternoon, the pulse vibration is
still there, it gets better, but I can still feel it when braking.
what could be the cause for the vibration? it was very typical "wrapped
brake" symptoms: light braking feel the pulsing vibration from brake pedal,
as well as the noise, harder brake feel less vibration.
Any advice is appreciated...
TIA
(posted also at www.volvoforums.com) | s*****e 发帖数: 893 | 9 According to an independent mechanic I've talk to, he said that car
manufacturers are using cheaper grades metals for rotors for cost reduction.
They are still performing as ever but don't age well. He sees that same
vibration issue more and more.
A friend also told me that if you wash your wheels too soon after you drove
for a while (witch I did often after coming back from work in the evening)
you can warp your rotors more easily. I don't know if that's true... | D********d 发帖数: 2154 | | | | s*****e 发帖数: 893 | 11 Rotors, like everything else, are no longer overweight boat anchors & are
machined to a much higher tolerance. A "normal" brake job for most everyone
reading this forum would involve replacement of the pads and rotors. Why?...
because your rotors will drop below the minimum thickness before your
second set of pads wears out. Turning rotors is in almost all cases a waste
of money! Make sure the wheel hub is free of rust, dirt, etc. (ie. it's flat
). Use a bit of grease or anti-seize to keep it that way. Grease your
caliper & pad slides, torque your lug nuts & all is good, it's that simple.
If you actually read the link I left above + Victor's post you will
understand some of the other variables. Most of this pertains to racing. Yes
, you will have trouble if you pull straight off the track, pull the e-brake
& park it. Washing your car after driving home from work is NOT a problem.
Check your suspension bushings, tie rods, etc.! Read the OP's comments "
Although the steering wheel shakes, I don't notice any pulsing from the
brake pedal." Brake pulsations caused by worn suspension are VERY common.
There were factory bulletins on the problem from both BMW & Audi a few years
back. I have personally had this issue with both my old 855 & my S40.
Disregard this advice at your own expense. | s*****e 发帖数: 893 | 12 Hello All
Replacement XC90 less than 20km and still sitting on the showroom floor.
Leaking roof with water coming in after a few buckets thrown over the roof.
I also requested Volvo to check the brakes with the 2 technical journals out
for the front and rear brakes and response was that they will not do
anything with the brakes until they start squeaking. This is a known problem
and I am already onto my second car and you would think they would be going
all out to ensure that the customer does not have any issues with a
replacement car.
You can also go to the following web page and register your Volvo XC90 car
complaints.
www.carcomplaints.com
You can log it against the Volvo XC90 2016 model. I have started to log all
my XC90 issues here as well as not much response from Volvo.

Not a fun experience. Brakes squeak like crazy. Embarrassing | s*****e 发帖数: 893 | 14 Rosy reviews from people that were in the car for a few hours or a day can

, UK. Bought my first Volvo (moving from Audi / Range etc) partially because
I'm Swedish and though that I should pay tribute to an excellent piece of
design and safety work (yes, I know that Geely owns the business)..
Brakes were squealing from day one; when releasing the brakes at standstill,
as well as just before standstill when breaking.. Sounds like a tractor.
Passengers often ask what's wrong..
Brought the car to West London dealership three times (also to address other
problems - some more serious) and they worked on the brakes three times (
over the lapse of 10 months).. They would return the car but the problem
always persisted. They didn't even bother to properly check the outcome of
their work.
After the third time (late this spring) I got told that 'Volvo was aware'
and that they would get a new set of rotors (or whatever) in August that
would finally address the problem. That car went in last week and I
literally begged them not to release the vehicle until they were confident
that the issues had been addressed.. West London Volvo in Chiswick promised
and then deliver the car back to my house.. When I got back home Friday...
Same problem.. Completely unacceptable.
I like the car and accept - I'm not naive - that there were going to be
issues with the first sku in a new model / platform line-up.
However, the communication, service and follow-up is abysmal and potential
buyers need to be aware of this. Not sure whether this is an issue that also
has to do with Endeavour - that company that runs the facilities in West
London, which is doing such a shockingly bad job with my car..
I've spent far too much of my time on this already: as a finale though,
ahead of just trading it for a car which works (accepting the financial loss
and never buying a Volvo again), I'm thinking about taking out an ad in a
local paper describing my problems in the classified section where Volvo
typically advertises, partially for fun but mostly to get Volvo to do
something about this (the more traditional ways of communication have
seemingly failed to yield a result).
