principal software engineer的工资怎么也有120K以上吧。
做consulting还得自己买保险，交ssn。。。

一种case是公司不愿意雇full time employee，非关键性，非长期职位，找个
consultant来做，其实就相当于临时工，现在经济不景气，可能compensation是在下降。
一种是high end的consulting，比如那活没几个人能搞定的，只有你有那金刚钻能揽瓷
器活。
说白了，rate其实就是买卖双方bargain结果，对于consultant来说，就是看自身的
skill以及和自己竞争的competitor的skill，是吧。

let me give a baseline of what I am thinking for two cases you listed:
一种case是公司不愿意雇full time employee，非关键性，非长期职位，找个
bottom line, the market is so hot, 75$ an hour is in the low bar.
一种是high end的consulting，比如那活没几个人能搞定的，只有你有那金刚钻能揽瓷
器活。
This is professional consulting with special domain expertise, 120$ is the
low low end of bar. A lot of time it goes to 150$ +

Don't know. Maybe area dependent. In our area, usually $50-70 with a
master degree + 3-5 yr experience, our salary is usually lower than software
industry. $45 is really low a principal position in software industry.
This one, $120-150 maybe for people who do it as a 2nd job, no
committment on the speed of progress
and availibility. Professional consulting as his/her main job may charge
starting at $200/hr I guess.

50$ an hour is insulting rate for middle level engineer in Boston area.

训练一个水管工要9年，训练一个教授的时间恐怕要长那么3-4年。
