I saw lots of people majoring in these two areas, but seems it is not easy
to differentiate them. I am very interested in data mining, so which of
these two has a tighter relationship with data mining?

machine learning area. The authors should discuss more about motivations
instead of simply deriving complicated equations.

Pattern Classification, by Duda etc. Good and comprehensive beginning book.
Learning kernel methods, by Herbrich, Good intro to kernel methods and
statistical learning theory.
Data Analysis, A Bayesian Approach. A concise and clear introduction to
Bayesian methods.
