a*****s 发帖数: 838 | 1 anybody has any idea about this?
there is a used spinet piano sold in local and i wonder if it is worthy to
checck it out. thanks. | a*****s 发帖数: 838 | 2 since nobody answered it and i had done a little bit of reading about it, so
here is what i have found.
spinet is the smallest version of piano, uses a different type of mechanism
to generate the sounds compared to regular upright / grand piano. it was lar
gely made since 1930 upto recent emergence of electric piano. basically the
eletric piano elbows out the spinet piano due to its cost and convenience, w
hich were pretty much the reason why spinet was invented back in those days,
because it allows a family to own a piano at a low cost.
the mechanism though used by a spinet piano, although largely reduces the sp
ace of the piano (hence a small house can have one in their living room as w
ell), but it is at a significant cost of tonality. it has short string, also
uses different way to hit the string (in fact it pulls up something first b
efore hitting the string) - therefore the maintenance of a spinet piano thes
e days could be problematic and costly. the length of the string, makes huge
difference in terms of the bass of the tone. the longer the string, the
better the bass it has. hence, the 9 foot long concert piano has the best
quality of bass; whereas the spinet, with the shortest string, it has the
worst quality of bass. you may say, well, it doesn't matter much to me as i
only need to practice my skills. true, but then also you need a decent piano
to keep you motivated. good sounds from a decent piano definitely can keep
you motivated if you need that bit of motivation.
spinet piano looks somewhat differently than regular upright. if you look at
their legs, their are separated from the main body; however if you look at
an upright, the legs are still connected to the main body and it has got whe
els as well. this is generally true. also the heights different, too.
regular upright somewhere like 52", a console piano maybe 40some inches; and
a spinet piano is like 36". so it is also the shortest piano.
some piano repair shop also carries pianos at an affordable price. and they
fix the piano to a great level of quality. i have looked around on craigslis
t for several pianos. most of them are spinet, but the owners don't necessar
y tell you that. also, they may claim that it is well kept, however, one of
them, i found it was well kept only exteriously, the inside looks horrible (
got mold in it). also, one of the key mechanism doesn't work well and the ow
ner does not know it. also, for the past 20 years, they have only tuned this
piano once... mind you, do not risk your own money and interest to get such
a piano if it was not properly kept for a long time, because, chances are,
they may break up when it is being tuned again. you don't want to see that
to a instrument that you just bought.
anyway, my tip from this is - maybe really, it depends on luck to get a good
one at a cheap price on craigslist, but sometimes, you can talk to local pi
ano shop / repair shop, they may carry piano you want at a good price. and
sometimes they even included tuning and shipping fee in the price. how
convenient!
