428 | 4 let me add a few more points, group rides in my area have been having
crashes.
1. On a slow ride, a new girl crashed and was knocked unconscious. She was
drinking water with one hand on the handlebar and couldn't maneuver around
an obstacle.
Lesson: When you drink, make sure that there are no turns coming up, no bad
road condition ahead, etc. If you HAVE to drink in those conditions, then
pay attention to the road, NOT the bottle.
2. On a race paced ride, a new but strong guy was in front. He wa | n******d

bike, learn how to handle the bike, and get to know your strengths/
weaknesses.
Once you are confident on the bike and you know your limits, THEN go to a
group ride. Pick one that rides slightly faster than your comfortable solo
speed. So, suppose you can comfortably average 16 mph, try a group that
averages 17-18 mph.
Ride with this group for a while, when you feel that it is too easy and
you are not being challenged at al | J********e
1498 | 8 one thing I've learned from the crits is that you need to observe the riders
around you. if the guy is not smooth and can't ride a straight line,
chances are his bike handling skills are lacking, so stay away from him.
especially, avoid riding behind him. it's even worse if there are two rough
guys riding back to back in front of you.
another point is to avoid overlapping wheels. if something happens or if
the guy in front suddenly slows down, you can steer out of the pace line
into the win
