offer. This is my dream job. I have another onsite interview next week in a
less good school (it is still a good school but ranked lower than the first
one). I am thinking of cancle the onsite interview since it is quite time-
cosuming to prepare a good talk. My question is: what is the chance that the
first school takes the offer back? After all, I have not signed the
paperwork yet. Do you guys have any suggestion? Thanks. |

发帖数: 733 | 4 Thank the Chair by email and ask him for a draft offer letter through email
ASAP. Just say you want to look at the details. Once that in hand, decline
the other onsite. You can mention the 2nd onsite but don't say you want to
cancel it, cuz that way you might lose some leverage during negotiation.

why should I waste my time and their time? |

% of my effort on the interview, and there is a good chance that I may not

and there is a small chance that they may take the offer back...If I have
signed the letter, I will definitely cancel the trip.

I think you should definitely go to the second school. In academia you
should get yourself as much accessibility as possible. You might impress the
people there, so that they might later recognize you when they are in grant
committee/conference committee or as referees. You never know.
It takes you 3 days but they worth it. Unless you think you will leave them
bad impression, which is unlikely to happen since you got the dream job --
you must be really strong.
If you have already signed the contract, do not go. It is very rude to waste
the second school's time. |

It is very true for your first cent.
For your second cent, I am very close to accept the offer from the first
school. In other word, I know that I will not go to the second school even
if they give me the position unless the first school takes the offer back,
which is rare.
I plan to call the chair explaining to him my situation. If they want me to
give a talk there, I will go.

gave two talks and met with 30+ faculty (all top candidates from the first
visit were invited for a return visit). It does not look like they made a
decision in a hurry...患得患失. Anyway, it is an interesting experience.
