As a general rule, if the mother marries someone else and the stepfather
wants to adopt your child, think it over carefully. In most states, once the
stepfather adopts your child, you lose all parental rights. This includes
court-ordered visitation. Hopefully, the mother and stepfather will let you
visit your child, but there's usually no legal obligation for them to do so.
