I'm working on my dissertation proposal. But because I don't get paid from my
advisor and don't work with him, I don't have much communication with him.
When I selected my dissertation topic, I had meetings with him. I told him
that I want to do research about young children while his research has nothing
related to kids. He referred me to a prof. in the dept. of psychology , who is
doing research with kids. After meeting with the prof. in psychology for
several times and doing some readi | x*****i 发帖数: 4035 | 2 I'm also in social science and don't communicate much with my advisor either,
except that my dissertation has a lot to do with his research interests, hehe.
a few questions:
first of all, does your proposal relate in any way to your advisor's research?
if not, you'd better choose another chair (assuming he is your current chair).
if yes, involve your advisor more in your research, by setting up weekly
meetings, for instance.
2. what kind of person is your advisor? is he likely to be upset about

| c***y 发帖数: 31 | 3 hi, thanks for your suggestions and questioning.
For my case, since he refered me to the prof. in psychology and both of them
have some cooperations, I ASSUME he should not be mad about me. But maybe i'm
wrong. I'll ask around to see...
But for the issue that I emailed him and he didn't reply, is it appropriate
for me to email him again to ask for setting up meetings? If so, does it sound
like I'm pushing him?
Thanks again.

| x*****i 发帖数: 4035 | 4 I don't know about your school, here we need to push them HARD to get any
progress on research. i seldom do that and therefore get no progress at all :(
the profs in my dept won't be mad at all if you show interests in research and
want to have answers to your questions. does your advisor push you at all? if
not, you need to push him, hehe. in any case communication is key, and don't
assume anything. good luck.
