S******y 发帖数: 1123 | 1 We are a 40- 50 people research group for a large organization.
I have finally persuaded my big boss to get our FIRST Linux box for us
to experiment with (for example, building a prototype of forecasting
system based on a Linux-based web server, etc)
My boss asked me to come up with a proposal (cost, what type of
hardware, where to buy, etc). I promised him that a few hundred
dollars would do.
Can anybody suggest a box for us as the fisrt Linux box in our group?
I think that it would be nice to have > 2 processors to experiment
with Hadoop (or other map-reduce environment).
Your suggestion would be greatly appreciated!!! It could lead us to
adopt more Linux-based computing environment if it works out well.
It could also lead to me being beheaded by the IT folks here who never
want to touch Linux (if that does not work out well...)
I will send you bao zi for your reply!
Have a nice weekend! |

A few hundred you don't really have much choice. I suggest
you go to dell and pick the best of tower server you can afford.
The low end one starts at $300.
Linux is not that picky about servers. Make sure you don't
buy windows, pick no-OS or Linux OS so the OS part is free.
Pretty much any machine well do. Go to craigslist get some cheap
used machine will work as well.

S*A 发帖数: 7142 | 4 It really depend on what they do.
e.g. How much RAM do they really need.
No way 2 core and 8G RAM system around $300,
unless it is used.
No pron on those servers so I doubt they really need 1T HD.

S******y 发帖数: 1123 | 5 Thanks! Here is what I plan to pick based on your suggestion --
Total $629. Do you think it a good setup ? Thanks again!
BTW, how can I tell whether it is a 32-bit or 64-bit machine?
(I am a research scientist, not an IT guy.. so your input is highly
appreciated!) |
S*A 发帖数: 7142 | 6 Please select no OS instead of the SUSE *Enterprise* linux.
SuSE linux cost money. You can install linux yourself for free.
Looking at the rest...

S******y 发帖数: 1123 | 7 OK. I dropped SUSE Linux.
The price has dropped to $350.
(But I had horrible experience installing/configuring Linux at home before
many years ago [still redhat 4 or 5].... so I think that pre-installed Linux
would be helpful.. but I did not know they cost money!) |

S*A 发帖数: 7142 | 9 I did it without the SuSE Enterprise Linux come out
$329.
If you have money, consider bump up memory to 4G.
Hard disk in Dell is too expensive. Consider add more if you
run out of disk space. But it from newegg.com will be cheaper.
BTW, you can buy memory upgrade from newegg.com as well, it might
come out cheaper as well.

Any way, that CPU does support 64bit and it comes with 4 cores.
It also have virtualization feature in case you care.

S*A 发帖数: 7142 | 11 Just burn of those Fedora 14 LiveCD and install it from there.
Ubuntu is very popular choice as well. If you know redhat,
Fedora is pretty good.
Linux

S*A 发帖数: 7142 | 15 Xeon is just a service side brand name, it could mean totally
different CPU.
That CPU in the dell box is the server equivalent of i5,
it is definitely not out dated. For that price it is not bad
at all.

S*A 发帖数: 7142 | 18 Stay away from CentOS if all possible. It is extremely old and
very hard to use. Our company provide RHEL image by default, the first
thing I do is reinstall Fedora :-).
I recommend order is Fedora, Ubuntu, then maybe some thing else.
CentOS is very last on my list.
linux.
