consult your doctor. Because of the multiple pregnancy, I ended up taking
this the entire rest of the pregnancy. Every time I tried to stop, the
nausea started again. Most women can stop at about 12 weeks (3 months).
•2. Try taking your vitamins at bedtime. Try stopping your vitamins
for a couple of days. Try taking them with food. Try a different vitamin. It
is more important to eat a healthy diet than to throw up vitamins. I found
out that the vitamin I had switched to around that time was making things
worse.
•3. If you smoke, you should stop. It isn't good for the baby, and it
makes the nausea worse.
•4. Try keeping soda crackers (saltines) at the side of the bed. Have
a couple before you get out of bed in the morning. I carried them in my
purse, had them in my desk and even kept them in my car.
•5. Take your liquids separate from your solid foods. I don't know why
this works, but it helps. Make sure to keep well-hydrated. It may help to
have something to sip on all day. You will have to see if you do better with
really cold fluids or something a bit warmer.
•6. Avoid fried and fatty foods. Your gallbladder doesn't function as
well during pregnancy, so you can't handle these foods as well.
•7. Some pregnant women find that peppermint helps with the nausea. I
kept a stash of little peppermint candies next to the crackers. It seemed to
be time-of-day dependent. The peppermint worked better in the afternoon.
•8. Many women will do well with some form of ginger. Ginger tea,
ginger snaps or ginger ale. Be careful about different herbs. Check with
your doctor if you are not sure.
•9. It is best not to let your stomach get completely empty. Many
women feel sicker when there is nothing in their stomach. Frequent small
meals during the day will also avoid the "too full" feeling that makes you
sick to your stomach with large meals. Don't increase the total number of
calories.
•10. Take extra good care of yourself. Get plenty of sleep. You will
probably notice that you are more tired during this part of your pregnancy.
•11. Avoid overheating. Your body is changing. There is more blood and
blood flow during pregnancy. Blood vessels start to dilate. You will flush
and get hot more easily.
•12. Exercise as you can tolerate it but watch your heart rate.
Discuss this with your doctor. Gentle exercise will help you during your
entire pregnancy.
•13. You may find certain odors or activities will trigger your nausea
. I love coffee, but couldn't stand the smell of it first thing in the
morning. Try to avoid those things that "set you off" as much as possible.
•14. Some women use aroma therapy to help with unpleasant odors or to
help with the nausea. We used to put a couple of drops of Oil of Wintergreen
inside our surgical masks if we had a case with a bad infection. It worked
to keep the odor down. It's the same theory as using Menthol under your nose
for a stuffy nose.
•15. If none of this works, you may need medication, or you may need
to be in the hospital for a period of time. It isn't your fault, and you
aren't crazy. Your body just isn't adjusting well to the pregnancy hormones.
Hang in there.
