Why there are people in India with last names Saldanha and Barboza? I
thought they were from Spain?
The Portuguese arrived in India, in Calicut initially, in 1509. That's about
40 years before the Mughals [Afghans] and about 200 years before the
British, French, Danes, Dutch and other European countries. In 1509,
Portugal and Spain shared royal families and still had disputed borders.
They had been one country until quite recently. So Iberean names were well
established in India in the 16th and 17th Century. Today, there are more da
Souza families in India than Smith or Charpentier or Van der Veldt.
Don't forget that the Portuguese didn't relinquish their Indian colonies
until 1961, after over 450 years
The British left in 1947, after 90 years
And the French maintained a colonial presence in Pondicherry and other
places in the South East even until 1983, after about 200 years. | I******I 发帖数: 14241 | 3 good
