My answer is Yes and No.
Almost every country is kind of brainwashing their people.
Recently I read the blog of a Taiwanese who got his PhD Degree in Physics
from Harvard University and worked in world famous financial organizations
for many years. He mentioned a book "Formacao Do Imperio Americano/Rise of
the American Empire" written by Luiz A.M. Bandeira and published in 1998. He
said merely in mock, "it has been 16 years since Portuguese version of this
book was published but I can find no English version until now. This is
actually what I already knew - American Freedom of Speech lets a hundred
flowers blossom and a hundred schools of thought contend except the truth."

Aren't these democratic countries attempting to control their people's minds
? Compared to CPC's propaganda, Propaganda in Western countries are more
sophisticated and elaborative.
Yes, definitely, Taiwan is full of anti-China/Mainland propaganda as you
have seen.
The main issue is not that Taiwanese people are fooled or just informed of
biased information. The main issue is that a large part of Taiwanese
operating double standards. Actually, they don't really care about and wanna
defend their noble values they ostensibly claim. Interest is the only
concern.
How did I know it? I watched tons of Taiwanese TV shows, read a lot of
articles and debated with Taiwanese guys a lot before.
Let me present some scenes below:
Scene 1:
You probably often are indoctrinated by part of Taiwanese claiming
government of The Republic of China in Taiwan is Chinese government-in-exile
and KMT Chinese Mainlanders are oppressors, a group of dictators & even
colonists, and these people should go back to where they are from.
Usually I first accept and respect their views. Then I state the irrefutable
fact that those so-called Taiwanese are not indigenous Taiwanese but the
descents of colonists Hoklo people. Their ancestors did the same things as
Portugueses and Spanish men did in South America - Colonization of Taiwan.
Many Hoklo people came to Taiwan island without wife and children and they
killed indigenous Taiwanese males, conquered land of indigenous Taiwanese,
and seized indigenous females to use as resource of sex and producing
offspring. Their ancestors were definitely colonists of Taiwan who conducted
cultural genocide. As we all know, so-called "台語/Taiwanese language" is
not the language of indigenous Taiwanese and Taiwanese language is none of
their business. Plus, That's why many Taiwanese claim they are blood-mixed
with aboriginals and even ridiculously make use of this as an excuse to
claim that many of them Taiwanese are not Han Chinese and thus deserve
independence of their Taiwan .
Once I asked them, if you think these KMT Chinese mainlanders as outcomers
and even colonists and they should be driven away, what do you think about
yourselves? Aren't you outcomers and colonists who should be driven away as
well according to your logic and noble values? Isn't it justifiable?
Guess how they reacted? Majority of them kept silent afterwards and one
Taiwanese young guy argued that Western colonists are never willing to leave
Northern & Southern Americas and Oceania, why shall we?
Actually many of their ancestors are accomplices of Imperial Japanese
military. They don't honor China's great contributions and sacrifice to anti
-fascism war and legal right to gain the territory stolen by Japan.
Since they always consider them as the most pathetic group, they switch the
roles between victims of territorial cessation due to China's defeat in
First Sino-Japanese War and thanksgivers with gratitude to Imperial Japanese
rule without any feeling of violation.
However, Ironically, when as the role of victims of territorial cessation
due to China's defeat in First Sino-Japanese War, although more than
hundreds of thousands of Taiwanese were massacred under Japanese rule, these
Taiwanese would not claim compensation and apology from Japan and glorify
the period of Japanese rule; when as the role of thanksgivers with gratitude
to Imperial Japanese rule and accomplices of Imperial Japanese military(
Several dozens of thousands of Taiwanese joined Japanese armies to invade
Southeast Asia & China Mainland, and 420K Taiwanese voluntarily signed up
for Imperial Japanese Army), they don't think they deserve status of
defeated country as Nazi Germany which ceded East Prussia to Poland and K&#
246;nigsberg to Soviet Union. In contrast, they should have been treated as
a colony and have had right of Resident Self-Determination.
Taiwanese are always thinking them as the most innocent and pathetic. For
China, they adopt another standard that Outer Mongolia could secede from
China with help of Soviet Union and A lot of lands in China was occupied by
Imperial Russia, why can't we?
That guy won the lottery, why can't We (Taiwanese)? That guy was bullied,
why can't be you(Chinese)? LOL. God is unfair.
Now you know how these Taiwanese people are conducting their double
standards. "裝睡的人，你永遠也叫不醒。" You Can't Wake Up A Person Who Is
Pretending To Be Asleep.
Scene 2:
You can see a lot of Taiwanese describing Chinese mainlanders as poorly
educated, narrowly minded, and even dirty. Compared to Chinese Mainlanders,
they especially in the south of Taiwan consider them as well educated,
civilized, and superior.
You can see tons of stuffs in Taiwan trying to persuade public that China
and Chinese have no culture and are also evil, poisonous, dirty, and poor.
They even dare to behave as racists and in public advocate "支那賤畜，外來種
滾/You, cheap Domestic Animals from China, Outcomers(Chinese Mainlanders),
get out of Taiwan!"
I ever mocked part of Taiwanese,"You let me fully realize what Taiwanese
cherish. The most barbarous Communist Party of China educates(brainwashes)
their under-privileged poor people to be friendly with Taiwanese people and
they are our brothers & sisters, meanwhile so-called superior & civilized
TAIWANESE and these universal values believers dare spare no effort to brace
the most shameless racist statement declaring China and Chinese are all
evil, poisonous, dirty and cheap.
Ironically, when extremist Muslims in the Middle East, Europe and the United
States massacred innocent civilians in name of Allah and wanted Sharia law
to rule the whole world. Hillary Clinton probably is one of the most
hypocritical politicians but she would say: "Let’s be clear: Islam is not
our adversary. Muslims are peaceful and tolerant people and have nothing
whatsoever to do with terrorism."
At that time point, I "had" a more thorough conviction of Taiwanese
democracy and the declared advanced & civilized society in Taiwan.
Left behind many Taiwanese "interesting" views such as most of Taiwanese
Comfort Women were voluntary and not forced into sexual slavery, Japanese
rule was not colonization, and Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity of Imperial
Japan was not an invasion.
In fact, disputes of doctrines ultimately come down to disputes of interest.
Isn't it?
Let me give my 2 cents on analysis of the root cause:
The real reason is that these Taiwanese from the South of Taiwan need a
sense of their superiority and claim they are far superior to Mainlanders
and more civilized.
People always want superiority or kind of equivalences to justify everything
they own, their value and their meaning of existence.
Apparently, Taiwanese with this opinion are totally wrong. Also, I know
there has been a lot of anti-Chinese propaganda in Taiwan’s media and
education.
However, the root cause of Taiwanese hating Chinese is that China’s
peaceful rise and great achievement are proving their systems and what they
believe in are probably wrong and even they are losers.
They attribute their failures in economy, ideology, and even moral to China
and Chinese. People may not care about being called devils but certainly
hate being called losers because ‘loser’ probably means lose everything.
Your success and even existence may be the root cause of your competitors
losing their fame, wealth, status, and even country. Theodore Roosevelt says
A large percentage of Taiwanese believe that misfortune of Taiwanese
originates from China, Chinese culture and even Chinese people. They are
always trying to persuade others and even themselves they are the most
pathetic. They wish China’s economy collapses and China can break up into
pieces. They hate Chinese not willing to free up living space to make
themselves Taiwanese great(maybe great again).
That's why I answered NO at the same time.
Several months ago, I read a comment of one article in the New York Times on
Western Countries’ attitudes on Catalonia Independence Referendum.
He says, "It's amazing to see how overwhelmingly the Western governments,
politicians and media react against on Catalonia's independence, while
hypocritically support the separatists of other countries. Democracy is
right only when it serves your own interests".
Do I get the essence of Western Democracy?
After all, Pharisaical spirit probably is the most despicable yet stubborn
human feeling. |
