province of China. This novel coronavirus, thought to have been initially
transmitted to humans from an unknown animal source, is now being spread
from person to person and causing an outbreak of respiratory illness. In
addition to thousands of cases in China, multiple other countries, including
the United States, have confirmed cases of coronavirus. In the U.S., cases
have been confirmed in the cities of Seattle and Chicago, and in Orange
County, California. The virus, like influenza, is believed to be spread by
respiratory droplets produced during coughing and sneezing.
Coronaviruses are well-known causes of the common cold, but can evolve into
novel strains as with SARS and MERS-CoV. There continues to be intensive,
ongoing investigation to learn more about this latest virus, such as the
source of infection, populations at risk, and manifestation of symptoms.
