Thankyou points there when I login, it's just the thankyou account is locked
. Called in and was told they do this on customers for account maintainance
occasionally, and it may take weeks to unlock.
I am sorry to say this, but, you points are gone. You represent the 'new'
process by which Citi is closing accounts... (back to my explanation from
above).
Previously Citi shut down accounts, and if you were quick, you could go an
redeem your TYP's out. In my case my TY Account had full access for nearly a
week after account closure.
Now they've updated the process in order to capture those TYP's.
1) They lock your TY Account
2) They investigate you
3) They shut you down
4) They drain your TY Account
Even this morning 3 more people I know of have shared reports with what I
can tell the same set of events. One of which was a work colleague of mine
whom I know 'face to face'. So, it was definitely clarified, no ambiguity in
his details as he shared with me...
Previously they never performed step #1, and took about a week to perform
step number 4 after they did number 3... So folks from last months purge
could 'cash out' so to speak (if they were quick about it).
At any rate, their clear motive is to renege on the 5X TYP deal... It's
unlikely at this point you'll be able to 'go crazy for 1 month' (as some
have suggested) because once flagged I doubt you're getting the points even
if you accrue them. My colleague was accruing them for nearly 2 weeks, but,
had no access to his account to redeem them. Then finally they closed all
his cards and purged all points from his TYA.
he noticed he couldn't access his TYA, but, pending purchases posted,
statements cycled, and thus he did see points still post to his TYA despite
not being able to redeem anything>
Finally, not sure what specifically the 'flag' is yet, so, don't bother pm'
ing me asking as such.
I can not implore as much to tread very carefully on this one. Citi is
definitely purging customers, and the commonality is all have this specific
card and with this specific 5X deal...
If you have 'gone crazy' and not yet been locked/closed/etc... do not delay
in cashing out your points. It's not a matter of 'if' it's a matter of 'when
' "

My TY account was locked a couple of weeks ago after I redeemed a decent
amount of points. Received the checks, deposited and they bounced. Called my
bank and apparently Citi put a stop payment on them. It appears even
cashing out doesn't always work, however, there is no harm in trying.
I guess I'm waiting for my card to be shutdown and then AA. Not sure what I
can do proactively to avoid AA other than close my card and keep my fingers
crossed. Any suggestions?

you see, people, I am very passionate about this end of miledum. It has been
my MO since like day one in here--many moons ago.
Company X offers promo A
Company X changes or ends promo A OR kicks people out who are doing promo A
Company X still has to pay out on promo A
or
People sue Company X and Company X pays out on promo A.
repeat
I've seen it a hundred times and have had my own relatively successful
experiences with it in both companies and financial institutions. Same game
every time.
You think WE are a problem? They actually go to the ends of the earth to see
who will actually litigate! They are scammers, not us. Never doubt this.
now, here's a semi related scenario which could be a bit like what might
transpire with citi if one takes them to task:
Payal gets on my case after I push 'too many' moneypaks into my paypal acct
and then take out my money (withdrawl to bank acct linked to pp)
I contact them and after making it up many levels of CSR to supervisors, etc
, I talk with someone who says, and I quote: Well sir it's not in our terms
that you cant do that, but we dont like it so we could freeze your account.
My reply: I will now need the name and address of your legal council because
that just DOES NOT fly!
Their reply to this - after a long pause: Well, um there's no need for that
um sir... just slow down your deposits and withdrawls and do some activity
with the money you put in paypal...
Now I put in say $2k a week and let it sit a week and then withdrawl it to
my bank. Has worked without issue for a year+. Same with another family
member's acct. I just dont take out the money right away.
Seem obvious to some? Maybe. But the fact is they admitted they do not even
have T&Cs forbidding the activity!
I would beg to offer that yes, if you do a certain large amount of something
with any promo or gig or bank or whatever, your name comes up above the
radar screen. Sure. But unless you are breaking some sort of rules with them
--that can be CLEARLY defined and defended to a T, then you should not be
concerned.
Yes if Citi were to shut me down I could have issues trying to get AA miles
because now I wouldn't have a AA CC but as for banks and equity lines, I
could get another in a heartbeat so who cares. They don't care about me, a
babbling FTer, and I don't/cant care about them, a poorly run bank.
T&Cs have to be clear. If Citi has issues with people buying $1,007.90 worth
of something every day at CVS then they have to pretty much state that IN
the terms! If they do not, screw em.
If I were shut down by them now, I would demand my points. All of them. I
would take them to the AGO and then to SC court. I would win. There's also a
99% chance they would probably contact me to settle out of court. They MAY
decide to provide THEIR cash value of the TY points and cover court costs,
or they may give me access to the points for use as any open acct has, but
with no new way to add more.
In the T&Cs the way I read them, there is nothing against using your card,
paying it off a lot, using it again, buying anything we buy, or earning
points on that.
But of course, THEY have the money and currently the power. It was a wise
old friend of mine who once said it all comes down to the fact that they
want to keep control of that, and not let you have any of it. Since we do
have a lot of control with this TY card, they are upset and need to shut it
down. Again, you simply combat that move by suing them outright.
Call me what you will, but it works. I wish it didn't have to come to this,
but it does, and like I said, I have run into it a lot myself. Why? is that
some sort of flaw in my personality that I somehow attract this type of
thing and am sue happy or something? No. I just do not like it when the
outline I wrote above about company X and promo A does not work exactly like
I wrote it.
thank you and good luck in your own situations.

I had all 3 of my cards closed recently. The frustrating part is that a day
before the statement closed, I called into them to ask about why I couldn't
access my rewards site. The gentleman on the phone said it's temporary and
that my account was under review, but that I don't need to worry about my
points being missing. I confirmed this with him and specifically said that I
don't need to think about losing my points, and he confirmed this. A day or
two later, my statement closed, and my card stopped working. My rewards
account is closed and doesn't show up at all when I login now as well.
I'm not one to push my luck, though he did tell me that my points were
secure.
I'm not sure what to do - I only had maybe 30k of points remaining, so it's
not worth any kind of serious thought as an individual.
If someone here knows how to take this further as a group or with federal
regulators in some way, let me know, because I'd be glad to look at
supporting it. "

All my Citicards were shut down this weekend as well (I found out while on
vacation trying to buy gas). At first I thought it might be a fraud alert,
but then when the rep couldn't tell me the reason for the closure, I knew
what happened. And then I came to see all the new shutdowns reported here.
Since getting the Preferred card earlier this year, I've probably averaged
15K in monthly spending; some for your typical gas and groceries and other
routine purchases, and more at drugstores. I'd only spent a few thousand on
my current cycle after seeing all the reports here, although I did drain my
TY account in the past 2 weeks of almost $1000 in TY points with flights and
gift cards. Not sure if that had anything to do with the shutdown, but I
obviously wasn't going to leave the points there.
I'm not really sure what to do here. I'm pretty sure Citi won't just start
listening to our complaints. I'm not sure if the Feds will. I actually don't
mind very much that Citi shut down my Preferred card. I mean, that's a
lousy thing to do, but it's within the realm. I don't think they have the
right to confiscate my remaining TY points (under 30,000 worth), and I don't
think it's right for them to shut down all my other Citi credit cards. That
might hurt my overall credit rating, and do material harm to me.
It would be helpful if everyone keeps updating us on their situations, and
what government responses they've received.

Citi got me too! Latest statement on my 5% EDP Preferred cut on Thursday,
and sometime over the weekend all 3 of my Citi card accounts were closed.
Trying to view TYP balances is broken from the Citi card login associated
with the cards, but going to thankyou.com and logging in with my thankyou.
com credentials works fine. I have redeemed for a number of Best Buy gift
cards and am now hoping for the best!
My Forward is gone (no big deal) - I don't eat at restaurants or see movies
much, I basically just abused Amazon's classification as a book store, but I
have an Ink for that anyhow.
My beloved no-fee Citi TY Premier is gone. It just helped me buy some
ridiculously-priced short haul tickets recently, so that's a sad loss. But I
was looking at my TY rewards history and I've only redeemed TYP on 3
flights in 5+ years, so no big deal.
As for the usage pattern that got me nailed, $28,000+ of EDP spending each
month since January that earned me just over a half million TYP and Kroger
fuel points worth ~$300 for my vehicles.
Truth be told, I haven't cared about a Citi card since the AA cards I got a
couple years ago that got me 150,000 AA points. I've been a thorn in Citi's
side for years, and I can't blame them for shutting me down. I know they say
not to burn bridges with CC companies, and that's a good rule of thumb. Don
't worry Citi - you'll be seeing me again. Under my wife's SSN.

Citi got me too, and even went above and beyond the call of duty and closed
all 6 of my Citi cards in the process. Worse yet, those ba$tard$ put a stop
payment on a ~$2k mortgage check that had been deposited 2 weeks earlier. I
can halfway understand them thinking that they can confiscate (per the T&Cs)
TYPs where the CC statement hadn't closed yet so they hadn't posted to one'
s TYP acct.
Worse is that they are confiscating people's TYPs that had already posted to
the TYP acct................ that is over the line IMHO. But it is
COMPLETELY over the line for them to put a stop payment on a mortgage check
that they issued weeks earlier when the TYP acct was in good standing.
I HIGHLY urge everybody who has had their TYPs confiscated to file
complaints with the appropriate regulatory agencies, BBB, and even try to go
to the press (Travel Omsbudman writers such as Joe Brancatelli, Chris
Elliott, Linda Burbank, etc). Enough complaints and hopefully at the very
least they will be required to pay us back for our already earned TYPs. It
really just seems completely wrong that they think they can confiscate
already earned rebates from our credit card purchases. Not to mention the
bait and switch that they employed by baiting us with 5x rebates and then
subsequently shutting down all our Citi accts. But that last one is probably
a bit harder for us to prove than the clear as daylight confiscation of
already earned TYPs. That must be against some type of banking regulations I
would think, so please if you got hit by Citi, FILE THOSE OFFICIAL
COMPLAINTS ASAP!! You will be doing all the rest of us a favor in the
process!

I pulled the trigger this morning to close my TYP card myself. My accounts (
credit card and thankyou) are still in good standing. But I don't know how
long it will last. I am hoping to shut it down so that my other citi cards
won't be impacted. Of course citi may still close my other cards. But I'd
guess the risk now is lot lower now.
Here's my brief TYP card history:
I was not aware of this thread before. I opened a TYP card in April and hit
$12k purchase in the first billing cycle before I saw this thread. Then
stopped the spending. The first statement came out fine with 65k points. I
cashed it with an air ticket, which went fine. Now it's closed by me. We
will see if this is a good decision.
Will shift the spending to other cards such as US Bank Cash+ (still earning
3.125% on drugstore in the next 2 months). |
