c*******r 发帖数: 13580 | 3 if it's just something you need to check off from your 100-things-to-do-
before-you-die list, go with RMI. all you need is physical strength. train
yourself in the gym for half a year, test yourself by hiking up Mt Si with a
35 pound pack in 2 hours, and you are good to go. in the actual climbing,
you don't do much other than blindly following.

y*****y 发帖数: 3433 | 23 What you can do now:
1. Go to mountaineers website to join to the club, pay attention to the
basic climbing class registration date. When it is open (October?),
register for 2010 class.
http://www.mountaineers.org/
2.Attend hiking activities organized in seattle board. You can contact
johney, they typically go out every weekend. Or you can do your own regular
training on Mt.Si or Cable Line in Tiger Mountain.
3.If interested, join Vertical World for some gym climbing, it is very
helpful for y

o*****e 发帖数: 379 | 24 A message from forum...
I've taken the Mountaineers class (10yrs ago) and have helped teach the WAC
class. Here's my thoughts on both of them:
Mountaineers:
* much longer class
* more open weekends between fieldtrips/flexible scheduling
* much larger class (100-200 students?)
* more expensive (~$200?)
* accepts most anybody
* more fields trips means more time spent on some skills, less self-study
needed
* follows 'Freedom of the Hills' very closely
WAC:
* shorter class (10wks)
* almost

y*****y 发帖数: 3433 | 25 Basically I do not agree with any of the sentence quoted below.
Mountaineers:
* much larger class (100-200 students?)
Because of the size of the Mountaineers they have a more bureaucratic
process/experience to the whole club, and especially the climbing class.
After finishing the lectures/fieldtrips you have to do 3 official climbs to
'graduate', and signing up for those climbs is very difficult - basically
wake at 6am, put your phone on redial for the automated climb registration
system

c*******r 发帖数: 13580 | 27 However, I strongly agree with the fitness requirement part though. Everette
branch has that kind of requirement. Sadly Seattle doesn't. That contribute
to the fact that many people sign up climbs that they are not physically
capable of. If I were to make the rules, I would require everyone being able
to go up Mt Si with a 30 pound pack in 2 hours. (That's what Everette
branch is doing). This is a very benign criterion

c*******r 发帖数: 13580 | 29 For me, it's the opposite. I want all my partners to be strong. When
something does happen, I don't want anyone to be a liability. You should
always be climbing at a comfortable pace anyway. Pace control is a big part
of leading a climb. Just because you are strong doesn't mean you have to go
at a pace that everyone else is struggling.
