l*******o 发帖数: 669 | 1 After my family's Yellow Stone trip got cancelled at last minute, I had one
week of vacation time that I could use to climb but nobody to climb with, so
I got this crazy idea of solo climbing all 14ers in Elk range in Colorado.
Day 1: Castle
An easy peak and a good warm up hike for me so I could get a chance to
acclimatize. Met someone on the summit who told me he did Maroon Group grand
slam (Maroon Bell traverse + Pyramid) under 8 hours last year. Amazing.
Good weather on the hike but rain started in the evening.
Day 2: N. Maroon Bell
Navigation error right off the bat. Missed the Crater lake trail in the dark
and kept on the trail closest to the lake and ended up doing the "scenic
loop" and wasted 40 minutes. At around 9:30am, sky turned cloudy and at 10:
00am it started to drizzle on and off. I already made the NE ridge at over
13k so I kept on going. Summited alone in white out. Minutes after I left
summit, it started to rain hard. Rock slabs become very slippery so the
initial part of the descent went slowly. Fortunately, navigation is relative
straightforward on this peak. It turned sunny in the afternoon but rained
again in the evening.
Day 3: Elbert
At around 5:00am when I was ready to get up and go for Pyramid, it started
raining. Not wanting to repeat the miserable experience I had the day before
, I decided to drive to Leadville to climb Elbert. It may not be very
enjoyable to climb Elbert in the rain but at least it would not be dangerous
. The weather turned out to be reasonable on the entire climb. Back to Aspen
in the evening.
Day 4: Pyramid
At around 5:00am when I was ready to get up and go for Pyramid for the
second time, it started to drizzle lightly. Not again I thought. I had no
intention of trying a different class 1 peak again today so I waited to see
if the weather would improve. At 5:30am, the sky broke up so off to Pyramid
I went. This peak turned out to be very enjoyable with some solid class 3/4
climb on "green" rock. Navigation was harder than N. Maroon Bell but not too
bad.
Day 5: S. Maroon Bell with traverse to N. Maroon Bell
This was the peak with the most challenging route finding problem. Getting
to the South ridge is straightforward but from there to the summit is not
trivial at all. In addition there were tons of loose rocks to deal with.
Weather also turned sour when I was on the ridge. It got quite windy and it
started to hail. Fortunately it did not last long.
The traverse was fun. There were a few solid 5th moves with tremendous
exposure. It was not as easy as it sounded - windy, cold hands, clumsy
hiking boots, at about 14k. Navigation on the traverse wasn't very hard.
Day 6: Capitol
With 17 miles around trip distance, this was the longest climb. Again, I got
lost on the approach trail in the dark and ended up bushwhacking for a
couple of hours to regain the correct trail. On this mountain, the rock
quality was the poorest among all Elk range mountains I climbed. In some
places, for example, on the traverse near the summit of K2, the rocks were
so loose it became quite a bit scary. The knife edge ridge was delightfully
solid, with kickass exposure. That was the best part of the climb.
Unfortunately, this was the only truly enjoyable part of climb after the
Daly-K2 saddle. If I would climb Capitol again, I would not go around east
side of the K2 from the saddle, but rather climb the K2 north ridge directly
. Excellent weather the entire day, the only day I did not get rained/hailed
on, either on or off the mountain. (There was a body recovery operation
going on when I climbed Capitol, someone died there due to falling rock the
day before.)
It was a great solo climbing trip overall. The weather derailed my plan of
climbing all six 14ers in Elk range (missing Snowmass) but I still consider
the trip a success. The total number of 14ers I summited went from 3 to 9,
with 45 to go. | E*******e 发帖数: 1371 | 2 兄台体力不是一般的强啊,而且在不利天气状况下solo爬elk那几个山需要过人的胆识。

My legs were getting tired from day 5 and I was getting noticeably slow on
the last day. If the rain did not derail my original plan, then I would have
attempted Snowmass on the last day. Honestly I am not sure if I would be
able to do it.
