I have a question regarding auto-iso and flash setting that is really
frustrating. Hope someone here can shed some light.
Basically I was shooting kids pictures in door. Nikon seems to auto-choose
too low iso value while firing ok amount of flash. This causes ambient
background too dim, giving a deer in headlight wash out feeling. I can't
bounce the flash because the ceiling is too high(in a gym). Here is a
specific case:
D800e, 70-200 2.8 vr2, sb700:
M mode, 1/125, f2.8, auto-iso 2500, matrix metering, no flash.
M-mode, 1/125, f2.8, auto-iso 640, matrix metering, flash slow sync.
If manual iso is set to 2500 with flash, I get much better result.
A or S mode doesn't change much. Spot metering auto-iso chooses 1250, a
little better.
Dial Flash comp to -1 or -2 didn't help, only under exposure accordingly,
still auto-iso at 640.
I basically only want some fill flash, while keeping metering at no flash
level. It seems nikon algorithm dealing auto-iso and flash is very confusing
. What I would like it to do in auto-iso is stick with base-iso value, until
reaching shutter or aperture limit, then auto dial up auto-iso setting, and
lastly reduce shutter speed beyond safe limit.
Manually set iso resolves the problem. But that is inconvenient. Auto-iso is
very useful when there is no flash.
Any one can shed some light or share some experience?
Thanks in advance.
