"Virial" was coined by R. Clausius who first proved the scalar virial
theorem in 1870. Clausius called the integral corresponding to the
-0.5 \times the trace of the potential energy tensor "viral" ((i.e. -0.5
\times the total potential energy).

Guess not so important from then on, maybe you could get a relation between
the conserved pontentials and kinetic energy and that's it.

however, it was revised and became important in quantum
mechanics as well.
