The most important thing is your future salary will be based on your current
salary.
For example, if you only get a postdoc at 35K$, the next position you get
postdoc will be around 40K$, faculty will be around lowest entry level.
But you get at 45K$, the next position will be around 50K, faculty will be
middle entry level.

The easiest way to check whether a postdoc fellow is officially regarded as a
trainee is to ask your prof for one of his grant proposals, and see how he
justifies the proposed expense on postdoc salary. --- He must have said that
it is for the purpose of "training postdoc fellows", and there must be a
section in his proposal saying how his proposed research has "impact on the
