I********e 发帖数: 6130 | 1 November 2013, Kauai.
The weather was perfect, mid 70’s during the day, sunny but not too hot;
sometimes it rained a little during evenings which just made the air fresher
. I couldn't've asked for better.
As someone who can’t swim, the only water activity I could do was
snorkeling. Even that was kind of challenging as I would freak out if the
water was too deep :P Last time (and the only time) I snorkeled before this
was 3 years ago.
But I loved seeing fish, especially colorful ones. Next time I would for
sure invest in a cheap underwater camera :P
We went snorkeling almost every other day – I mean, if it were completely
up to me we’d go every day but I couldn’t be that selfish. Heh.
By the 3rd time I was completely comfortable in the water and fully enjoying
the experience. It was very sunny that day and we went somewhere (
unfortunately I forgot the name of the bay) that was somewhat wavy as I was
getting adventurous. The sun shined through the water and it looked magical
on the ocean floor.
We were just swimming around with me being in the lead, of course! I love
animals; I appreciate every opportunity being up close and personal with
them. I’ve been shot by a tiny stream of water from a burrfish; I’ve
touched a baby seal; I’ve held a 7-month old kangaroo…well you get the
idea.
Then there he was, a huge sea turtle.
He just suddenly popped into my view. The water was slightly murky there so
by the time I saw him, he was only about a couple of feet from me.
He was eating something off of the reef. He was so calm, just taking his
time and minding his own business. The fact that 2 humans just got close to
him didn’t seem to bother him one bit.
I could see his eyes clearly. They look so peaceful. He slowly moved along
the side of the reef and we swam with him. He used his flippers so
effortlessly and elegantly as he travelled in the water.
It’s hard to explain what I was feeling at the time. I was super excited
yet felt so calm at the same time because he was so calm. I was completely
amazed by this magnificent creature, all the while feeling a little nervous
because he was so big and my natural reaction was to touch him but I couldn
’t bring myself to as I was afraid he might get annoyed and bite me or
something….and for someone who can’t swim it probably wasn’t a good thing
to get attacked under water.
My friend, who’s a reasonably good swimmer, went and touched him on his
shell a little bit (which we later learned wasn’t something you should do
because you could transfer something harmful to turtles by touching them). I
was very envious but in the end was too chicken to do it :P
We swam along his side for a good 10 minutes before he decided to go further
in the ocean where the waves looked a bit too strong for our taste.
We did a lot of fun things in Kauai but that was something I will remember
for a long, long time. When I think about Kauai, I would close my eyes and
see the turtle.
That day I didn’t touch a turtle, but I was touched by one. |

Yes, I was vacationing in Kauai last Nov. And I actually remember a lot more
than the turtle. But you know what, I don't even consider that as an
indication of good memory, just very normal memory :)
Remembering something very interesting from a few years ago is really not a
big deal. I am sure you remember some too, no?
