than previously expected, according to the latest forecast issued Monday by
research firm eMarketer.
This year, for the first time, less than half of U.S. internet users age 12
to 17 will use Facebook at least once per month, the eMarketer report said.
In the past, Facebook was able to count on its Instagram platform to retain
a young audience. Snapchat, owned by Snap (SNAP), may now be siphoning away
more users than expected.
In 2018, eMarketer said, the number of users age 12 to 17 and 18 to 24 "will
decrease by 5.6% and 5.8%, respectively. This is the first time eMarketer
has predicted a decline in the number of U.S. Facebook users in those age
groups."
Both Snap, with its Snapchat app, and Facebook's Instagram provide a mobile
communications platform used for sharing photos and videos, with social
networking features.
The eMarketer report said Facebook is still adding monthly users overall,
but older age groups are mainly responsible for the increase. It predicts
Facebook will lose 2 million users under 25 in the U.S. this year while
Snapchat will add 1.9 million. The study says the declining trend in users
under 25 is expected to continue into 2019 and 2020.
Snap reported fourth-quarter results on Feb. 6 that smashed revenue
estimates and also beat on the bottom line as it added more users than
expected.
Shares of Snap were up 0.6%, near 19, during afternoon trading on the stock
market today. Facebook shares were down 0.2%, near 175.75.
Facebook delivered its fourth-quarter earnings report after the market close
Jan. 31, sending shares on a wild ride. | l*****r 发帖数: 2123 | 4 干掉 小扎
