June 27-28 Dimen Dong Folk Chorus Show at Aisa Society TX Center
Just let you know that upon the invitation of Asia Society TX Center, Dimen
Dong Folk Chorus of Guizhou Province,China (16 people) will present two
unique shows at Asia Society TX Center on June 27 (Thur) and June 28 ( Fri),
6:30pm.

Dimen Dong cultural Eco-museum · Kam Grand Choirs team
地扪侗族人文生态博物馆侗族大歌演唱小组是由6岁至16岁的侗族小孩组成，她们来自
中国贵州黎平县茅贡乡地扪村，她们都是博物馆“百首侗歌传承计划·少年侗歌队”的
成员。
The singing group Kam Grand Choirs of the Dimen Dong Cultural Eco-museum
features 6-year-old to 16-year-old Dong kids from Dimen village, Maogong,
andLiping County in Guizhou Province, China. They are allchildren team
members of 100 Dong Songs Program.
地扪侗族人文生态博物馆“百首侗歌传承计划”从2003年开始实施，先后组建了儿童侗
歌队、少年侗歌队、青年侗歌队、中年侗歌队、老年侗歌队，至2012年已累计培训侗族
文化传承人800余人。该项目获得美国总统艺术人文委员会2012年11月9日在白宫颁发的
第15届“国家艺术人文青年活动奖”。
Beginning in 2003, the 100 Dong Songs Program of theDimen Dong cultural Eco-
museum has organized choirsof children, juveniles, the middle-aged, and the
elderly,training more than 800 people in Dong cultural heritage.The Program
received the President of the United States Artsand Humanities Commission on
November 9, 2012, at the White House’s 15th “National Arts and Humanities
Youth Activities Awards”.
侗族是一个在中国有一百多万人口的民族，侗族人是集中生活在中国西南山区里的原住
民，那里有很多像贵州省地扪村这样的村落。一直以来，侗族人只有语言没有文字，他
们世代通过歌声记录自己的传统习俗和历史，侗族大歌是一种无伴奏多声部复调音乐，
已被列入联合国《人类非物质文化遗产代表作名录》，侗族人用数量繁多的歌曲类型记
录了从氏族的历史传说到社会礼仪与责任。甚至，生活在那些遥远村庄的侗族人在经历
了很长的历史时期之后也能鲜活地保存自己的传统文化，有些歌曲记录的事情，甚至可
以追溯到600年以前。
The Dong population includes over one million people in China.The Dong
people are an indigenous ethnic minority group whose population is
concentrated in the mountainous village of Dimen, within Guizhou Province,
aswell as in other villages in southwestern China. Traditionally, the Dong
people had no written version of their own language. Instead, they passed
down customs and history from generation to generation through songs. Dong
music is a cappella multi-voice polyphony,and it has been included in the “
Intangible Cultural Heritage List of the United Nations”. The Dong recorded
everything--from clan history and legends to societal rites and social
duties--in a variety of song types. Even while living in remote villages,
the Dong were able to preserve their cultural traditions with remarkable
fidelity over extended periods of time: Some of their songs record events
that date back 600 years or more.
地扪侗寨，位于中国贵州省黎平县茅贡乡境内，全村分为5个自然村寨，有500余户2300
多人。地扪，侗语音译为泉水不断涌出的地方，象征村寨发祥、人丁兴旺。根据当地古
歌传唱的内容，唐朝时期就有侗族人在这里居住，至今已有千余年历史。美国《国家地
理》2008年5月份出版的中国特刊，用24个页码、13幅照片、近万字的篇幅刊登了著名
美籍华裔女作家谭恩美讲述的地扪侗寨的故事——时光边缘的村落。
Dimen village is located in Liping County, Guizhou Province, China, Maogong
rural territory. The village is divided into five natural villages, with
more than 500 households and a population of more than 2300 people. In the
Dong language, the name Dimen means “springs gush.” Springs are a symbol
of the village’s flourishing population. According to the local ancient
songs sung, during the Tang Dynasty, Dong people lived here.Dimen village
has more than a thousand years of history. In May 2008 National Geographic
Magazine published an article by Chinese-American writer Amy Tan which tells
the story of Dimen village. The article, “Village on the Edge of Time,”
features 13 beautiful photos and nearly ten thousand words.

侗族大歌在2009年入选联合国《人类非物质文化遗产代表作名录》，联合国专家评说：
这是“一个民族的声音，一种人类的文化”。 1986年，在法国巴黎金秋艺术节上，贵
州黎平侗族大歌首度走向世界，被誉为“清泉般闪光的音乐，掠过古梦边缘的旋律”。
The Kam Grand Choir has been listed by UNESCO as a world-class intangible
cultural heritage since 2009. AUnited Nations Expert Comments: “This is the
sound of a nation, a human culture.” In the 1986 Autumn Art Festival in
Paris, France, the Guizhou Liping Kam Grand Choir performed for the first
time on the world stage.Reviewers described themusic as “the clear spring-
like flash music, skirting the edge of the ancient dream melody.”
据史料记载，侗族大歌起源于春秋战国时期，至今已有2500多年历史，是广泛流传于中
国南部侗族方言地区的一种多声部、无指挥、无伴奏、自然合声的民间合唱形式。侗族
大歌在侗语中俗称“嘎老”，“嘎”即是歌、“老”具有宏大和古老之意。
According to historical records, the Kam musicoriginated in the Spring and
Autumn Period and hasmore than 2500 years of history. This choral musical
tradition is widespread in southern China’s Dongcommunities. It is a
natural form of folk music featuring multi-part, a cappella harmonies with
no conductor.Dong Chorus in the Dong language is commonlyabbreviated as “GA
LAO.” ”GA” stands for music and”LAO” refers to a grand and historic
meaning.
侗族大歌一般由5人以上的歌队演唱，是一领众和、有高低音多声部谐唱的合唱种类，
属于民间支声复调音乐歌曲，这在中外民间音乐中极为罕见。多声部、无指挥、无伴奏
是其主要特点。模拟虫鸣鸟叫、高山流水等大自然之音，是侗族大歌编创的一大特色，
也是产生声音大歌的自然根源。其主要内容是歌唱自然、劳动、爱情、友谊，表现的是
人与自然、人与人之间的一种和谐之美。
Kam Grand Choirs with more than five people are lead by one singer who is
backed by a multi-part harmonic chorus. The music belongs to a tradition of
voice polyphony songs which is extremely rare in both Chinese and
international folk music, with multi-voice command and a cappella its main
features. Dong music is uniquely inspired by and imitates the sounds of
nature such asinsects, birds, mountains and steams. Its themes reference
nature, labor, love, friendship, and performance as a beautiful harmony
between both man and nature andbetween people.

侗族音乐按照演唱方式，可以分为单声歌和多声歌两大类。单声歌为乐器伴奏的琵琶歌
、果吉歌、笛子歌、木叶歌，以及无乐器伴奏的山歌、河歌、酒歌、拦路歌、耶歌、儿
歌等。多声歌有鼓楼大歌、声音大歌、礼俗大歌、叙事大歌、儿童大歌、戏曲大歌等。
Dong Folk Music can be divided into two categories: one-part vocal harmonies
or multi-part vocal harmonies.Some songs with one-part vocal harmonies also
include instrumental accompaniment, such as “pipa song”, “guoji song”,
“ flute song,” or “ kiba song;” otherswithout instrumental accompaniment
include “river song,” “drinking song,” “langlu song,” “ye song,”“
children’s song” and so on. Multi-voice songs include“drum towel da ge,”
“voice da ge,” “rituals da ge,”“narrative da ge,” “children’s da ge
