赐给真信徒,叫他们在祂里面有属灵的滋养和生长,并使他们继续向祂尽当尽的本分;

CHAPTER XXIX
Of the Lord’s Supper
I. Our Lord Jesus, in the night wherein he was betrayed, instituted the sacr
ament of his body and blood, called the Lord’s Supper, to be observed in hi
s church, unto the end of the world, for the perpetual remembrance of the sa
crifice of himself in his death; the sealing all benefits thereof unto true
believers, their spiritual nourishment and growth in him, their further enga
gement in and to all duties which they owe unto him; and, to be a bond and p
ledge of their communion with him, and with each other, as members of his my
stical body.[540]
II. In this sacrament, Christ is not offered up to his Father; nor any real
sacrifice made at all, for remission of sins of the quick or dead;[541] but
only a commemoration of that one offering up of himself, by himself, upon th
e cross, once for all: and a spiritual oblation of all possible praise unto
God, for the same:[542] so that the popish sacrifice of the mass (as they ca
ll it) is most abominably injurious to Christ’s one, only sacrifice, the al
one propitiation for all the sins of his elect.[543]
III. The Lord Jesus hath, in this ordinance, appointed his ministers to decl
are his word of institution to the people; to pray, and bless the elements o
f bread and wine, and thereby to set them apart from a common to an holy use
; and to take and break the bread, to take the cup, and (they communicating
also themselves) to give both to the communicants;[544] but to none who are
not then present in the congregation.[545]
IV. Private masses, or receiving this sacrament by a priest, or any other, a
lone;[546] as likewise, the denial of the cup to the people,[547] worshiping
the elements, the lifting them up, or carrying them about, for adoration, a
nd the reserving them for any pretended religious use; are all contrary to t
he nature of this sacrament, and to the institution of Christ.[548]
V. The outward elements in this sacrament, duly set apart to the uses ordain
ed by Christ, have such relation to him crucified, as that, truly, yet sacra
mentally only, they are sometimes called by the name of the things they repr
esent, to wit, the body and blood of Christ;[549] albeit, in substance and n
ature, they still remain truly and only bread and wine, as they were before.
[550]
VI. That doctrine which maintains a change of the substance of bread and win
e, into the substance of Christ’s body and blood (commonly called transubst
antiation) by consecration of a priest, or by any other way, is repugnant, n
ot to Scripture alone, but even to common sense, and reason; overthroweth th
e nature of the sacrament, and hath been, and is, the cause of manifold supe
rstitions; yea, of gross idolatries.[551]
VII. Worthy receivers, outwardly partaking of the visible elements, in this
sacrament,[552] do then also, inwardly by faith, really and indeed, yet not
carnally and corporally but spiritually, receive, and feed upon, Christ cruc
ified, and all benefits of his death: the body and blood of Christ being the
n, not corporally or carnally, in, with, or under the bread and wine; yet, a
s really, but spiritually, present to the faith of believers in that ordinan
ce, as the elements themselves are to their outward senses.[553]
VIII. Although ignorant and wicked men receive the outward elements in this
sacrament; yet, they receive not the thing signified thereby; but, by their
unworthy coming thereunto, are guilty of the body and blood of the Lord, to
their own damnation. Wherefore, all ignorant and ungodly persons, as they ar
e unfit to enjoy communion with him, so are they unworthy of the Lord’s tab
le; and cannot, without great sin against Christ, while they remain such, pa
rtake of these holy mysteries,[554] or be admitted thereunto.[555]
[540] 1 Corinthians 11:23-26. For I have received of the Lord that which als
o I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was b
etrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Tak
e, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of
me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying,
This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it
, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cu
p, ye do show the Lord?s death till he come. 1 Corinthians 10:16-17, 21. The
cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Chr
ist? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ
? For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of
that one bread.... Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devi
ls: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord?s table, and of the table of devils.
1 Corinthians 12:13. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, wh
ether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all
made to drink into one Spirit.
[541] Hebrews 9:22, 25-26, 28. And almost all things are by the law purged w
ith blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.... Nor yet that he
should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place
every year with blood of others; For then must he often have suffered since
the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he a
ppeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.... So Christ was once o
ffered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he ap
pear the second time without sin unto salvation.
[542] 1 Corinthians 11:24-26. And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and
said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remem
brance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped
, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as y
e drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and dri
nk this cup, ye do show the Lord?s death till he come. Matthew 26:26-27. And
as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and ga
ve it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took th
e cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it.
[543] Hebrews 7:23-24, 27. And they truly were many priests, because they we
re not suffered to continue by reason of death: But this man, because he con
tinueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.... Who needeth not daily, as
those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then
for the people?s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. Hebrews
10:11-12, 14, 18. And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering o
ftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man,
after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right
hand of God.... For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that ar
e sanctified.... Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering
for sin.
[544] Matthew 26:26-28. And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and bless
ed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this
is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, sayi
ng, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is
shed for many for the remission of sins. Mark 14:22-24. And as they did eat,
Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Ta
ke, eat: this is my body. And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks,
he gave it to them: and they all drank of it. And he said unto them, This i
s my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many. Luke 22:19-20. And
he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, Th
is is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise
also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my bloo
d, which is shed for you. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26. For I have received of the
Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same nig
ht in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he bra
ke it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this d
o in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he
had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, a
s oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this brea
d, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord?s death till he come.
[545] Acts 20:7. And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came
together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the mo
rrow; and continued his speech until midnight. 1 Corinthians 11:20. When ye
come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord?s supper
.
[546] 1 Corinthians 10:6. Now these things were our examples, to the intent
we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.
[547] Mark 14:23. And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave
it to them: and they all drank of it. 1 Corinthians 11:25-29. After the sam
e manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the n
ew testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance
of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the
Lord?s death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and dr
ink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood
of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread
, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth
and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord?s body.
[548] Matthew 15:9. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines t
he commandments of men.
[549] Matthew 26:26-28.
[550] 1 Corinthians 11:26-28. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink t
his cup, ye do show the Lord?s death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall
eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty
of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so le
t him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. Matthew 26:29. But I say unt
o you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day
when I drink it new with you in my Father?s kingdom.
[551] Acts 3:21. Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution
of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets
since the world began. 1 Corinthians 11:24-26. And when he had given thanks,
he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you:
this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, w
hen he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this d
o ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat th
is bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord?s death till he come. Luke
24:6, 39. He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when
he was yet in Galilee. Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: ha
ndle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
[552] 1 Corinthians 11:28. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat
of that bread, and drink of that cup.
[553] 1 Corinthians 10:16. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the
communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the c
ommunion of the body of Christ?
[554] 1 Corinthians 11:27-29. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and
drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and bloo
d of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bre
ad, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eatet
h and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord?s body. 2 Corin
thians 6:14-16. Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for wha
t fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hat
h light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what par
t hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple
of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath sai
d, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they
shall be my people.
[555] 1 Corinthians 5:6-7, 13. Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a
little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Purge out therefore the old leaven,
that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passov
er is sacrificed for us.... But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore
put away from among yourselves that wicked person. 2 Thessalonians 3:6, 14-
15. Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that
ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not
after the tradition which he received of us.... And if any man obey not our
word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he m
ay be ashamed. Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.
Matthew 7:6. Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye you
r pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn aga
in and rend you.
