President Donald Trump was asked by Ainsley Earhardt why he tweeted about
possible "tapes" of his conversations with former FBI Director James Comey.
The president revealed on Twitter yesterday that he never made any such
recordings and does not have any.
In a tweet last month, Trump said Comey should "hope" no such tapes existed,
prompting Comey to then leak memos about the conversations to the media.
Earhardt asked why the president wanted Comey to think he had tapes.
Trump answered that he's been reading about "unmasking" by the Obama
administration and the "horrible situation with surveillance all over the
place."
He said Comey's "story may have changed" after he tweeted about the
existence of tapes.
"My story didn't change. My story was always a straight story. My story was
always the truth," said Trump.
The president said it's "bothersome" that Robert Mueller, the special
counsel in the Russia investigation, is close friends with Comey.
"There has been leaking by Comey. There has been no collusion, no
obstruction and virtually everybody agrees to that," said Trump, calling out
Mueller's hiring of "Hillary Clinton supporters" to work on the
investigation.
He called Mueller an "honorable man" who will hopefully reach an "honorable
solution."
On "Hannity" this week, Trump's attorney Jay Sekulow called for Mueller to
investigate Comey's "illegal" leak of his memos.
