我会继续发贴，先写写找OBSERVERSHIP的心得，对2010年MATCH的人希望能有帮助。
以前一直抱怨住在小城市， 找不到OBSERVERSHIP的机会。 去年5-6月份想找医生
OBSERVE， 可惜没有人脉，也没有好意思按照保险公司的PHYSICIAN LIST逐个打电话，
象征性的打了几个电话被据之后，就按地址发信，结果是音讯杳无。
08年11月份， 我按照FREE CLINIC LIST 逐个打电话， 被2个CLINIC 同意去SHADOW
。今年INTERVIEW SEASON 结束之后， 抱着试试看的心理连打了十几个电话问
OBSERVERSHIP，有些被据，有些留言，结果一周后还真有位医生打电话来，愿意接受我
SHADOW WITH HIM。 现在我正在FULL TIME跟着这位医生。

是个什么东西，有什么用处。弄明白了，就知道其实有很多机会在身边。
1． Observership 的用处：
A． 建立connections：尤其是一些有RESIDENCY PROGRAM 的地方， 经常在领导面
前晃晃，时不时做个lecture什么的，给人家一个好印象，时间一久，说不定就成了。
有这样的成功例子。
B． 要推荐信，很强的推荐信：特别是一些很好的教学医院，即使没有希望进去，
能拿一封某某教授，甚至是chairmen 的信，也是很好的。但是一些小地方反而更好，
比如community hospital or free clinic。 这些地方可能没有牛人，但是医生都很热
心，出得的信都是很好。
C． 立体了解美国的医疗体系：这个目的很多人不以为然。这个体系中存在很多中
国没有的职位，例如PA, case manager, social worker, all kind different

Actually I have a question about observership in pathology. I am also going
to do a little rotation (observership) in a pathology department, but the
department doesn't have FAQ of observership at all, so that I don't know I
can get my questions answered before the first day rotation. So would you

这里提供一点内部信息，internal medicine上个月的waiting list就已排到10月了，
Gastroenterology 至少8月已满，pathology 的要有点基础的。cardiology 情况也差

My question is that I want to apply IM in stead of family medicine this year
. Does it help if I do the observership in family medicine? Also, the
resident is working in a clinic office. There are 30 doctors in the office,
but it is not a real hospital. I wonder how much does it weight if I get
recommendation letters from them.

openings of the Intenal Medicine observership program at New York Hospital
of Queens, Flushing(Queens), NY. It will be two-week full time observership
in hospital setting. You will be expected to stay in the hospital from 7am

月末结束。现在的房东一人住，想找一中国的女生做roommate。公寓极好，地段好，很
方便，离mount sinai只需走路20分钟，而且有两路汽车通往医院，一路汽车通往机场
，离grocery store, pharmcy, bank of american都是10分钟以内的路程。房东是
super nice，喜欢中国文化。有意者请回帖，我会进一步提供信息。 |

调USCE，Observership被一再热捧。甚至被很多兄弟姐妹看成a must-have，似乎没有
observer experience，申请住院医就没戏了。我觉得有必要阐明一下我对这个问题的
看法，请各位前辈、兄弟姐妹讨论。
1. 我们首先要弄明白 observer的目的是什么。个人觉得observer的目的主要有4个：
（1）看看某个专业是否适合自己：以我自己为例。我在申请之前一直认为自己会喜欢
病理。所以把精力全都集中在病理上，只申请了家附近的community program的内科作
为backup。虽然当时病理面试也拿了挺多，也很好，结果面试了两家就觉得chemistry
不对，根本不来电。反而是作为backup的内科面试，去一家喜欢一家，最后从了一家自
己所申请的内科里最好的program。想想当时如果做了病理的observer，申请前就知道
自己不适合，而把精力放在内科申请上，也许能去更好的program。从这个意义上讲，
不知道自己想干什么科的，应该做一下obser |

月。期间好好表现，争取拿到shadow医生推荐信。Commercial花几千块做Externship,有病人的
hand-on experience也是值得的。在申请Match的时候很管用。个个州(除加州）都有。甚至是在
大学里的externship. |

1. At least 5-year research experience in USA
2. Hand-on experience in biochemistry(skills in ubquitination and cell

and concentrate on the observership. In a clinic setting most likely you'll
get more hands-on experience. This and strong LORs from doctors are critical
for your residency application. |

just shadowing/following an attending and no direct patient contact. You
may attend some case discussions, meetings and lectures.
An externship on the other hand, offers some hands-on U.S. clinical
experiences. Students/graduates can touch/examine most patients. Externs are
like interns but without a contract with the hospital and their work is
unpaid like students.
The LORs should indicate you "observe" or "have hands- |

indicate your upcoming observership in PS. When you get a strong clinical
LOR you may assign the new one and de-sassign an old one to a program.
Certainly you can talk about your clinical experience during interview. |

昨天刚刚开始带新人的R3，可以告诉你6，7月是教学医院一年里最stressful的时候。
intern都忙着survive， R2，R3都忙着管intern管病人，attending有新的fellow要教
，又要盯着手下的新进住院医，没人会有时间顾到你。最最简单的操作也是R1先练手。
所以如果你时间宽裕的话最好十月以后再做。当然非教学医院，或者会诊科室会不一样

I discussed with my chairman about obersevership in Dept. of OB/GYN at Tufts
Medical Center. He is very positive for it. Now we are recruiting full time
observership candidates (only for Chinese/English bilingualist).
The rotation includes clinic, floor, and OR. Requirement includes passing
USMLE step 1 and CSA. It is better to have ECFMG certificate. Translation
service between English and Chinese is required for some health providers.

step1成绩不好（90出头），现在准备CS中。计划3月中考CS，7月底考CK。
本来只想申请IM。所以去年12月底开始在曾今工作过的医院（top3）专科做OB，一周2-
3个全天（8：30-5：30）。通常情况是attending，fellow外加一个学生或住院医。Top
医院的人个个是精英，觉得自己很难impress人家.
计划3月底开始去一家社区医院做OB，认识了一个hospitalist做sponsor，开始办理申
请手续。希望自己能好好表现，争取拿个IV。现在觉得以自己的水平（毕业久，没有临
床经验，脸皮薄，英语一般），可能会弄巧成拙。。。。
然后，在内科OB的过程中，觉得自己还是更适合病理，打算今年同时申请内科和病理。
又联系了本院一个专科病理医生。本来只想和病理医生做OB，拿封推荐信。结果人家建
议我OB全套病理，直接把我带到小秘那里，开始办正式申请手续。。。。
很愁，本来想全面撒网，现在却觉得精力有限。所有的手续都开始办理了，我却找不着
方向了。。。

a certain money for it. Usually, externship will charge you, but you will
get the hand-on experience.

面试之后还收到Program的信告诉你这个是违法的。所以大家还是要小心，即使是花钱
做。
2。能做inpatient externship是最好。不行再做Observership。 |
